The Master and Margarita by M.A. Bulgakov
Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita" is a modern fantasy novel written between 1928 and 1940, and it is one of the classics of the world literature. The main plot revolves around the Devil's visit to Moscow, the capital of the USSR, the world's first atheist state. It intertwines with the love story between an anonymous writer (the "Master") and Margarita, and the parallel story of Master’s novel about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. "The Master and Margarita" is steeped in dark humour and satire, laying bare the decay of soviet society of those years, and revoking profound reflections on human existence itself. The paintings and illustrations which are created by reading through the pages of the novel and imagining the events it depicts, are my first personal artistic project based on a book.
